Job opportunity: PhD candidate for interdisciplinary research on health effects of eMedia use of adolescents

The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, education and services at local, national and international levels. 900 people from 80 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases, environment, society and health as well as health systems and interventions.

In the framework of the EU/SERI funded study GOLIAT (5G expOsure, causaL effects, and rIsk perception through citizen engagement) a PhD study is offered for an on-going epidemiological study on the effects of eMedia use of adolescents on cognitive functions, behavior and health related quality of life including mental health. We will conduct a prospective study in the Basel area (BS/BL) and Central Switzerland with one year of follow-up. Thereby a main aim is to differentiate between biophysical and psychological pathways. The former relates to potential effects related to radio frequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) emitted by wireless communication devices; and the latter refers to aspects not related to RF-EMF such as use in the bed after lights out, addictive usage pattern or extensive social network use.
