Embodied Learning: Humanizing Higher Education

Embodied Learning: Humanizing Higher Education

Dear ICED network,

I am completing a book for Routledge, Embodied Learning: Humanizing Higher Education for the 21st Century (2027), and I want it to carry voices from across the world, not only my own.

Embodied Learning is a practitioner guide for academics, educational and academic developers, and anyone who facilitates learning. It treats the body as a site of knowledge, drawing on learning science to show how attention, emotion, and physical state shape what students can take in, and it offers practical ways to design for the whole person.

Embodied practice looks different across countries, cultures, disciplines, and institutional contexts, and that variety is exactly what I hope to show. I am inviting you, and the colleagues you work with, to contribute to a feature called Voices from the Field: brief accounts of a practice you already use that engages the body, attention, or emotional state in learning. This is not a research study, and no theory is required. It is simply a description of what you do.

To contribute, please email me directly at carlsmoore.phd@gmail.com with a few sentences on each of four questions, about 300 to 400 words in total:

1. What do you do? Be concrete: the setting, the activity, how long it takes.
2. Why do you do it, in your own words?
3. What does it look like when it works?
4. What happens when it doesn’t?

A few details:

– Please include a sentence on your national and institutional context, so readers elsewhere can understand the setting.
– Accounts should be written in English. Polished prose is not required, and I am happy to help with light editing.
– A selection of accounts will appear in the book. Every usable account will be featured in the book’s online companion collection.
– Contributors are credited by name, title, institution, and country.
– Please remove any identifying student information before sending.
– A short Routledge permission form will follow once I receive your account.
– Please send your account by Friday, 30 October 2026.

If you would like to know more before contributing, email me and I will send a one-page overview of the book and the permission form. Please feel free to forward this invitation to colleagues in your national network who are doing this kind of work.

With thanks and warm regards,
