The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of Center for Education Innovation.

The University

Founded in 1991, HKUST is an international research university dedicated to the advancement of science, engineering, business & management, and humanities & social science; education of the next generation of front runners, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and producing societal impact.

HKUST comprises around 700 faculty members, and an enrolment of about 10,000 undergraduate and 6,000 postgraduate students. It promotes interdisciplinary studies and a strong entrepreneurial spirit in a diverse learning environment that enhances student development of creativity, innovative thinking and a global outlook.  English is the language used in teaching, research and administration.

The University, being in its 30th anniversary, strives to think forward and transform education for the future that defies the boundaries of traditional fields and opens up new frontiers of knowledge and research to address unfolding needs of the wider society.  Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) [HKUST (GZ)], which is scheduled to open in September 2022, creates an exceptional opportunity to systematically develop cross-disciplinary programs in concert with the disciplinary-oriented efforts at the Clear Water Bay campus. Following a Unified HKUST – Complementary Campuses strategy, the two HKUST campuses will be fully synergistic without overlapping degree programs, forming a new and creative academic structure at HKUST.

Center for Education Innovation

The Center for Education Innovation (CEI) is an academic support unit which strives to proactively move forward the University’s teaching and learning strategy. CEI supports the University’s mission of advancing learning and knowledge by building the capacity of teaching staff to implement active learning and eLearning; supporting the professional development of faculty members, instructors and graduate teaching assistants and using research-based data to inform continuous improvement in learning, teaching and curriculum development.

The Role

Reporting to the Associate Provost (Teaching and Learning), the Director will lead CEI to support the University’s pursuit of excellence in teaching and education and oversee the development and implementation of strategic teaching and learning initiatives.  The appointee is expected to lead and provide advice on strategic initiatives, including experiential, online and blended learning, to different stakeholders ranging from senior management to Deans, Heads of Departments/Units, and individual teaching staff; and promote the adoption of technology-enhanced and student-centered approaches across the University.  The appointee will therefore need to coordinate and collaborate with counterparts at HKUST (GZ) and across the University. He/she will be responsible for managing budgets, compiling reports, and serving as chair/member on various education related committees/task forces.  A successful track record of participation or leadership on initiatives promoting educational innovation would be an asset.

The Candidate

Applicants should preferably have a PhD in education or a related field with at least 15 years of solid experience, preferably in the delivery of training programs to teaching/instructional staff in higher education. The appointee must be familiar with active learning pedagogic approaches and their implementation; course development and delivery in higher education for these pedagogies; instructional design approaches for eLearning and Blended Learning; and current and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning.  A high level of proficiency in spoken and written English is necessary.

Terms of Appointment

Appointment to the position will be on three-year fixed term contract, renewable on mutual agreement. Competitive remuneration and generous fringe benefits, including housing where appropriate, will be provided.  A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.
